Southern African Society for Plant Pathology
Advancing Agriculture in Southern Africa
The aim of the Society is to promote Plant Pathology in Southern Africa by acting as official mouthpiece of plant pathologists in Southern Africa. The society provides opportunities for plant pathologists to meet and exchange information of mutual scientific interests, coordinating affiliation with related scientific societies in Southern Africa, as well as with corresponding and related foreign societies, gathering and disseminating information on Plant Pathology.

UFS hosts the 53rd Congress of the SASPP

The University of the Free State hosted the 53rd Congress of the Southern African Society for Plant Pathology (SASPP) at the Golden Gate National Park, Eastern Free State from 22 – 25 January 2024.

With eight international keynotes, three invited speakers, 84 delegates, and 78 students a total of 71 talks and 75 posters were presented covering a wide range of plant pathology subjects.

UPCOMING EVENTS

The United Nations designated 12 May the International Day of Plant Health (IDPH) to raise global awareness on how protecting plant health can help end hunger, reduce poverty, protect biodiversity and the environment, and boost economic development. In light of this, the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (University of Pretoria) is again preparing to celebrate this international day. The celebrations are spearheaded by the Departments of Plant and Soil Science (DePSS) and Biochemistry, Genetics and Microbiology (BGM), Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI), and Centre for Microbial Ecology and Genomics (CMEG).

The IDPH 2024 celebration will be held on 10 May 2024 at the Plant Sciences Complex Auditorium from 08:00 to 14:00 at the University of Pretoria, Hatfield Campus.

Please register your attendance using the QR code in the IDPH flyer by 1 May 2024.

SPS-CEPLAS Summer School 2024

Plant science to tackle climate change

June 16-21, 2024 – Saint-Lambert-des-Bois – 40km from Paris (France)

This Summer school is co-organized by the French Saclay Plant Sciences (SPS) network and the German Cluster of Excellence on Plant Sciences (CEPLAS).

The SPS-CEPLAS Summer School 2024 will focus on introducing and discussing strategies, techniques and practices to carry out next generation plant research aimed at improving sustainable climate-change friendly plant productivity.

The summer school will bring together outstanding and enthusiastic young scientists (PhD students and young post-docs) and high-level researchers from all over the world in order to exchange knowledge and ideas. It is limited to a small group of participants (20 maximum) to privilege informal interactions and scientific discussions.

International Plant Protection Congress

The XX International Plant Protection Congress (IPPCATHENS2024) is going to take place in Athens, Greece from 1-5 July 2024.

IPPCATHENS2024 offers a great opportunity to researchers, academicians and plant protection specialists both from the private sector or governmental services and to relevant organization around the globe to present their data and share information concerning latest issues on Plant Protection and Plant Health. After the covid19 menace we are back ready to meet again in person and to find the way back to top international congresses.

Achieving sustainable cultivation of bananas Volume 3: Diseases and pests

Bananas are a key food source for millions, whilst their production supports the livelihood of farmers across the globe. However, recent research has identified the vulnerability of particular banana varieties to major pests and diseases, such as the threat of Tropical Race 4 (Panama disease) to the Cavendish variety. With the banana industry under threat of extinction, more research is required into understanding the biology of the pests and diseases that pose this threat so that more effective management strategies can be developed and the risk of future outbreaks reduced. Achieving sustainable cultivation of bananas Volume 3: Diseases and pests provides a comprehensive review of the major pests and diseases affecting global banana production including Tropical Race 4, black Sigatoka, banana streak virus, root knot nematodes, weevil borer and thrips. The collection explores existing methods for pest/disease diagnosis and identification, as well as current management strategies used to control and/or prevent outbreaks, such as cultural, chemical and biological control methods, the development of disease resistant cultivars and integrated pest and disease management.

The NSTF Discussion Forum topics include detecting and controlling plant health problems, research into pests and pathogens, chemicals versus biological control, and the role of breeding and technology for resistance.

Plant health in South Africa – threats to biosecurity, biodiversity and food security

The National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF) is partnering with Plaas/Farm TV (YouTube broadcaster) to broadcast a series of monthly talks during the year on the topic ‘Plant health in South Africa – threats to biosecurity, biodiversity and food security’.
