SA Academy for Arts and Science honours Prof Bernard Slippers with the Havenga Prize for Natural Sciences
On behalf of the plant pathology community in South Africa, the SASPP council would like to congratulate Prof. Bernard Slippers, director of the Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI) at the University of Pretoria, who was awarded the 2020 prestigious Havenga Prize for Natural Sciences by the South African Academy for Arts and Science. The Havenga Prize, established in 1945, is awarded annually to recognise significant and original research in the natural sciences or related technical fields.
The award recognises the substantial achievements of Prof. Slippers as a world-renowned tree health specialist and academic. It also highlights the wide recognition that Prof. Slippers has received for his scientific research and leadership. Examples include his role as the Director of the Tree Protection Co-operative Programme (TPCP), the founding Director of the Future Africa campus, and the newly-established Innovation Africa project at the University of Pretoria. He is also recognised for his role as a founding-member of the Global Young Academy in 2010 and South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS).
