Nominees announced: NSTF-South32 Awards 2023/2024
Recognising outstanding contributions to science, engineering and technology (SET) and innovation by individuals, teams and organisations in South Africa
The National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF) is pleased to announce the group of nominees contending for the 26th prestigious NSTF-South32 Awards.
The NSTF-South32 Awards: The NSTF Awards were established in 1998 as a collaborative effort to recognise and promote outstanding contributions to science, engineering and technology (SET) and innovation by SET-related professionals, teams and organisations in South Africa (SA). This includes experienced researchers, engineers, innovators, science communicators, engineering research capacity builders, and organisational managers/leaders, as well as data and research managers.
Our partner: South32 is a resources company and longstanding partner of the NSTF Awards, anchoring this endeavour to ensure the non-profit activities of the NSTF.
The ‘Science Oscars’ of SA: The NSTF-South32 Awards are known as the ‘Science Oscars’ of SA. They are the largest, most comprehensive, and most sought-after national awards of their kind in SA. They were also the first science awards in the country.
Special Annual Theme Award: The NSTF’s theme for 2024 is the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) in SA. The NSTF is making a special award recognising contributions in this regard. The 26th annual Awards Gala Event taking place on 11 July 2024 will celebrate this theme – save the date and watch your mailbox for further announcements.

The NSTF supports the principle of collaborative, widely-inclusive awards. The NSTF is proud to welcome new partners and prize sponsors as follows.
- NEW in 2024 – Science Diplomacy for Africa Award: The NSTF is partnering with the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) through their Science Diplomacy Capital for Africa (SDCfA) initiative, on a new award for Science Diplomacy for Africa. The award will recognise an outstanding contribution to SET and innovation by an individual or a team in SA which has led to impactful solutions and/or contributions through science diplomacy between and among countries for the benefit of SA and Africa.
- NEW in 2023 – NSTF-SAMRC Clinician-Scientist Award: This is the second year of a new award which is sponsored by the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) for an outstanding contribution by a clinician-scientist, with a focus on work to enhance life and to improve the health of the community. This new category is modelled on the emerging researcher category.
- NEW in 2023 – Green Economy Award: The Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) came forward last year in the run up to the 2023 awards to sponsor the green economy category

A transformed country where SET and innovation contribute to a high quality of life for all who live in SA, where the profile of SET professionals is representative of the population’s profile and where the education system is effective, particularly in terms of performance in SET subjects and promoting innovation.
Realising the vision: The NSTF-South32 Awards is the NSTF’s flagship event and one among other strategic activities through which the NSTF strives for this vision.
Partnerships for specific awards (such as with the Water Research Commission (WRC), National Intellectual Property Management (NIPMO), SAMRC, TIA and the SDCfA) recognise contributions that have the potential to make a positive impact on SA, and on the world.

Join the NSTF membership and pioneering partners/sponsors in applauding the 2023/2024 nominees contending for this year’s NSTF-South32 Awards. These are individuals, teams and organisations, as applicable, who are nominated for an outstanding contribution to SET and innovation in South Africa under the categories below:

Adjudication: The accreditation and selection process for the NSTF-South32 Awards are made by an adjudication panel of independent judges. They represent six different sectors of the NSTF membership. This adjudication panel, in association with the Award partners, review the nominations to select the finalists and winners each year. A panel of experts, appointed by the NSTF Executive Committee, assists the panel by reviewing and validating the final selections.
The announcement of the NSTF-South32 Awards finalists will be circulated through the NSTF eNews during the month of May. The announcement of the winners will take place at the Awards Gala Event on 11 July 2024. Save the date and watch your mailbox for the latest news.
The patron of the Awards, the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Blade Nzimande has been invited to preside over the presentation of the awards. A hybrid event with a live broadcast from two cities (Johannesburg and Cape Town) is planned for the Awards Gala Event. All finalists together with the sponsors are invited to attend. Tables and seating can be bought if available. The rest of the community will watch the live-streamed event via the NSTF YouTube platform. Watch your mailbox for news.

Youth programmes: One of the features that make these awards unique is that youth outreach is an integral part of the awards. Two NSTF Youth outreach programmes are run annually in conjunction with the NSTF Awards.
- The NSTF Brilliants Programme identifies and celebrates the top achievers in physical science and mathematics from the previous year’s matric examinations, who are studying in STEM related courses. (STEM = science, technology, engineering and mathematics.) It exposes young people to the SET and innovation community. First year students (a young man and a woman from each province) are recognised as possible future leaders and innovators. This year, 20 students have been selected for the Brilliants programme Three of these students have been selected to attend the London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) in July/August 2024. Sponsored by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI).
- The NSTF Share ‘n Dare Programme is an output of the NSTF-South32 Awards that profiles award winners as youth role models. Award winners share their experience and knowledge with thousands of young people at science centres and events across the country. Since the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, NSTF continued youth outreach by means of career talk videos that are produced and circulated to schools on USB sticks and online on You Tube to reach thousands of learners, as well as the general public. They encourage the youth to take up STEM careers as listed in our Science-based Careers booklet. Thousands of South Africans are also reached through community and national radio talks.

There are two media partners of the NSTF-South32 Awards to ensure national public recognition to the winners, as well as to create awareness amongst and facilitate the communication of science to the broader public. They are:
- Business Report, inserted in The Star, Pretoria News, Cape Times, and The Mercury newspapers
- Mail & Guardian
The Mail & Gaurdian will carry a supplement about the winners the day after the announcement is made, and the Business Report will feature the winners a week later to keep the news alive for longer. Business Report will then also produce a digital magazine (digimag) on the winners for online publication at the end of July. Unique advertising opportunities are available for your brand. Contact Ms Wilna Eksteen to put you in contact with the media partners.
