Join the Who’s Who of the science, engineering and technology (SET) and innovation community to see the glitz and glamour at the ‘Science Oscars’ of South Africa (SA), the prestigious NSTF-South32 Awards Gala Event.
The National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF), in partnership with co-branding sponsor, South32, invites you to a celebration of the achievements of South African professionals, teams and organisations in SET and innovation in SA. The live broadcast of the 24th NSTF-South32 Awards will be screened on the NSTF’s YouTube channel directly from the Gala Dinners held with finalists and the sponsors in Cape Town and Johannesburg (Jhb) simultaneously.

Masters of Ceremony: Dr Gillian Arendse (Cape Town) and Ms Zai Khan of SAfm (Jhb)

The awards and youth: The Awards Gala Event includes recognition of young people who excelled in physical science and mathematics in the National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) examinations of 2021. Under the NSTF Brilliants Programme, 19 students that enrolled for studies in SET-related courses at SA universities will be recognised on this occasion. South32 is sponsoring this unique programme this year together with the Department of Science and Innovation. and the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP). This year is the 21st anniversary of the Brilliants Programme.
Educational tour: In addition, The Lewis Foundation sponsors the students’ tour. They will visit four environmental and biodiversity sites, namely: Kloofendal Nature Reserve, Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens, Bothongo Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve, and Maropeng and Sterkfontein Caves. The tour would bring inspiration and awareness of the true value of the biodiversity of the natural world and our place within it.
Background on the NSTF and the Awards: The annual Awards is the flagship project of the NSTF. The NSTF is a non-profit organisation that has now existed and promoted SET and innovation in South Africa for 27 years.
The NSTF-South32 Awards recognise outstanding contributions to SET and innovation in the following broad areas under 13 categories:
- Scientific research
- Innovation
- Management and related activities
- Capacity development in engineering research
- Environmental sustainability and biodiversity conservation
- Water research and innovation
- Data management
- Science communication for awareness and outreach
- Special Annual Theme Award, this year recognising the basic sciences for sustainable development
